Get your lace ribbon from the cheap $2 shops or your fabric and craft shops. It should be one or two inches (3 - 5 cm) wide, and about a metre or a yard in length. Grab a few lengths in different colours. The staples of course were black and white, however, you may want to get coloured lengths to enhance the colours in your outfit.
Option 1) Line up your lace ribbon in half and place it over your hair tie for your ponytail. Either do a gentle reef knot or a bow, leaving long dangley, lacey tails. Don't forget to make your ponytail to the side, or as a fountain top ponytail.
Option 2) Tease your hair, and create classic 80s big hair. Tie the ribbon from behind your neck and ears, as a hair band. Ensure you do an even bow, and place over the part, which should be on the side of your head, and not the middle.
Banana Clip Way awesome. More of a later 80s thing, say around 1987..
If you can get your hands on one of these babies, you'll probably want to hang onto it, and use it in your everyday life. One of the reasons why I like them, is they avoid the bandy thing that goes on with your hair when you use an elastic hair tie.
These are available from most hair and cosmetic product stores these days. They are so versatile, and make the most of messy hair / bad hair days. Everyone with long hair used them. Wear it vertical, and if you are feeling a bit out there, try it on the side. You may need to create a bit of volume with your hair, so hair spray and a bit of a tease might have to be employed.

Scrunchie Okay, when you weren't using a banana clip, chances are, you had a scrunchy. And... OMG! Every different colour and fabric were available. If you were crafty, you or someone you knew, would make them. Some people made pocket money by making and selling them down at the local flea market. I went out bought a couple of gorgeous bright coloured satin scrunchies the other day, from an imports store. Two for $2. They seem to be more gentle on my hair than a regular hair elastic, and looked great with the hair in a side pony tail, for the true 80s look. It worry me about wearing it occasionally to work, even though they have a bit of a stigma.
I'll never forget the Sex and The City scene, where Carrie points out to her author lover, that New York women do not wear scrunchies, after he published a book, and wrote about a woman from New York, who wore a scrunchie.
He was not very happy, obviously, and was delighted when they lined up behind a woman in a bar, who was wearing a scrunchy. When Berger turned to Carrie and thinks he has made his point, Carrie quietly tells him, that the woman was not from New York. And it turned out when politely questioned, that the woman was from Georgia.
Anyway, I guess the point is, that they are not supposed to be in fashion any more. Having said this, they will probably be available for sale at your local supermarket, flea market and $2 shop. (And are still cool, I reckon... hence why I have started wearing them again! :P )
Headbands
80s headbands should be an easy addition to your 80s fancy dress costume.
You'll need mousse, a hair dryer, and it would help if you already had a few layers in your hairstyle too. The key, is to create a
blow-dryed
look, using a round brush, with your 80s hairstyle.
