80s Socks and Leg Warmers
80s socks and leg warmers should be considered as part of your 80s accessories, when creating your 80s outfit. Here are the most popular styles.
Made popular by shows and movies, such as Fame, Flash Dance and Footloose, leg warmers are heaps cool 80s fashion. I am trying to think when I last wore leg warmers, and I think it was 1986. I remember I wore a nice pair of jeans, hot pink sweater and hot pink leg warmers. I think the leg warmer phase had fizzled a bit before 1986, however, when Footloose was released, and constantly watched over and over again, leg warmers were cool. Especially if you matched them with your Nike high cut boots. The image below is from the Footloose movie, starring Kevin Bacon. (Gotta cut loose.. Footloose..)

We didn't wear leg warmers to school, so we wore really slouchy long socks, and scrunched them down. It had a very leg warmer appearance, and was tre' cool. We often used football socks for this effect. This is my year 12 school camp pics with my mates, from 1989. I'm the one wearing shoes.. My prized Nike high cut boots. Mmmm I loved those shoes, and I have been waiting for Nike to bring em back to the land Down Under.. and have proudly bought two pairs. I have just returned from a trip to Japan, and the fashion there is awesome, and has a distinctly 80s flavour. Leg warmers, and high cut Nike boots, are worn by heaps of people. Can you imagine my delight? As I was being a tourist, I found my feet ached from the amount of walking I was doing, so had to leave the Nike high cut boots at the hotel, and buy a pair of proper walking shoes to use in all day excursions. However, seeing I was in this amazing country of where nearly anything goes, fashion wise, I decided to wear my mis-matched fluro socks, and I think they were a big hit.

These socks are the thick work wear socks often worn with steel cap boots etc, however, I have decided that they should be worn as fashion too. I bought mine from Big W (A typical department store) in Australia. There were 3x pairs of socks to a pack, in each colour for around $8 a packet. Naturally, I bought both colours, and wear one of each colour most days. If you are looking for these socks, try and get the ones that are completely all fluro / neon. My previous lot of fluro socks I bought, had black feet, so I would have to try and hide the black parts, and had to fuss a bit more.
Other 80s socks include (if you can find them - although you will find them online!) the anklet sock with the pom pom on the back. These pom pom socks were worn with the white canvas tennis shoe.
To wear a dressier look, use a cute pair of ruffled or lacey anklet socks, with a lovely pair of heels. The heels do not have to be high, just dressy with a small heel is fine. Do you like the lacey anklet sock, that can be purchased from Amazon?
In 1984 and 1985, I continuously wore the neon socks, also known as fluro socks. They were cool. We used to wear two pairs and rioll down the colours on top of each other, so they were contrasting. eg: Hot pink, and fluro green. Find out more about fluro neon clothing
